Why does Farmington have an MPO?

Federal law requires an MPO for every metropolitan area with a population of at least 50,000 to provide a forum to address regional transportation issues. The 2000 Census reported a population of 53,294 for the Farmington urbanized area. The population of the area included in the Farmington MPO was estimated at 63,639.

What area is included in the Farmington MPO?

The Cities of Aztec, Bloomfield and Farmington and part of San Juan County are included in the Farmington MPO. A map of the MPO is available on this website.

There are a number of ways for you to get involved. All of our meetings are open to the public, or you can send your comments to us any of the ways shown on the Contact Us page. Why do we need the MTP?

The Farmington MPO Metropolitan Transportation Plan will guide the investments and policy decisions that will ensure a transportation system that meets the area’s future needs. The plan considers all transportation modes, including motorized vehicles, walking, bicycling, public transportation, and freight movement. It identifies the future transportation and mobility needs of the area, prioritizes projects, and identifies funding for needed improvements. The plan is being guided by the Vision, Mission and Goals statements.
