Red Apple Transit Study
Introduction
A comprehensive study of the Red Apple Transit system, completed in January 2011, has determined the type of transit services needed in the MPO by 2020. This transit planning effort is an outgrowth of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) for the region which establishes a 20 year vision for transportation within the Farmington MPO and helps to guide investments in all modes of transportation.
The study achieved the following outcomes:
- Determined the most feasible options for expansion
- Determined optium locations for a transit hub terminal in Farmington and MPO region
- Recommended converting to a bi-directional, linear route system to better serve the public
- Determined feasible routes and schedule changes to improve service levels by 2015 and 2020
Final Report
The Final Report is now available. The report includes data on greatest transit need, describes the recommendations for changing the system, and outlines an implementation schedule.
Existing Conditions
- The study area encompasses a population of approximately 61,500
- The highest concentrations of population density are found in the urban cores of the three cities, in Kirtland and Crouch Mesa, and along US 64 and NM 516.
- Transit dependent populations (those who rely on transit as the most viable means of transportation) are typically found in the central and southern areas of Farmington and in the northwest parts of Aztec and Bloomfield.
- 41-44 percent of commuters from Aztec, Bloomfield, and Kirtland travel to Farmington.
Greatest Transit Needs
The “greatest transit need” helps quantify potential transit demand and is defined as those portions of the study area with the highest percentage of zero-vehicle households and elderly, disabled, and below-poverty populations. The percentage of the population for each US Census block group within each category was calculated, placed in numerical order, and divided into five segments. The US Census block groups in the segment with the lowest percentages were given a score of one and the highest percentages were given a score of five. Each of the categories was summed up for a total score then ranked for the years 2010, 2020, and 2035
